About Us

Our Doctors

Dr. Richard Vivar, DVM, Practice Owner

I graduated from Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008. After three years of practicing in Southern California, I moved up to San Francisco to join the staff at Sunset Vet. I brought along my dog Willie who is a perfect partner for exploring the neighborhoods in the Sunset and finding new restaurants to try out.

Dr. Lani Wieman, DVM

I graduated from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 2011 and then traveled out to New York to continue my training as an intern at a specialty veterinary hospital. I live with my Shiba Inu rescue, Kea, and two cats, Bristol and Daniel. I enjoy scuba diving and traveling, and hope to start these up again now that I'm settled in the Bay Area. I spent the early years of my life living in Taiwan and am fluent in Mandarin.

Dr. Kristina Hansson, DVM

Dr. Kristina Hansson has been practicing small animal veterinary medicine for the past 9 years in Marin county and has recently joined the team of doctors at Sunset Veterinary Hospital. Dr Hansson enjoys taking a holistic approach to veterinary medicine with the primary goal of providing excellence in veterinary care while combining an integrative approach that promotes wellness and longevity. In her spare time Dr. Hansson enjoys spending time hiking and going to the beach with her great dane Napoleon.

Dr. Bill Rivers, DVM, PhD, ACVR

We are very pleased to have Dr. Bill Rivers as our consulting radiologist.  Dr. Rivers graduated from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 1984 and, after an internship with Dr. Steven Ettinger in Los Angeles the following year, he practiced general small animal medicine in the San Francisco Bay Area for several years. Dr. Rivers then completed specialty training and a PhD in Radiology from the University of Minnesota. He became board-certified as a specialist in Veterinary Radiology by the American College of Veterinary Medicine in 1995. After being on staff at two veterinary schools and a private specialty practice, he established his Bay Area Consulting practice in 1989.

Dr. Rivers performs the more complicated ultrasound examinations on our patients and helps us interpret our more complicated x-ray studies on our patients. His extensive training and experience helps us to provide the highest level of care for our patients.

Chris Karussos, Receptionist, Office Manager

I am one of the receptionists and have been here since the year 2000. I really enjoy greeting the dogs and cats when they come in for their appointments. It is a delight to see a dog or cat respond to their name!

Cherie Uyema, Veterinary Assistant

I came to Sunset Veterinary Hospital in Fall 2002. Previously, I had worked at a cat-only vet practice in Hawaii until I moved in 2001. Currently, my life is filled with kitty-love as I share my home with 3 cats (Piper, Speed Racer and The Emperor Gyoza--featured in this photo).

Jourdan McPhetridge, Veterinary Assistant

I started at SVH as a receptionist and quickly transitioned to work as a veterinary assistant.  I recently moved to Prince Edward Island in Canada to go to Atlantic Veterinary College and am so excited to continue down my path of becoming a DVM! I live with my two huskies, Vixen and Orion.

Nikki Akraboff, Veterinary Assistant

I grew up in the Sunset and have been bringing my pets to Sunset Vet for nearly 20 years. I currently live with my dog, Walter and my cat, Joey (pictured). I have a degree in mechanical engineering from MIT and have worked as an actress throughout the Bay Area.  I am currently completing my prerequisites for vet school. I started at SVH as a receptionist and am excited to be getting more hands on experience working as a veterinary assistant.

Rachel Goldberg, Veterinary Assistant

I relocated to San Francisco from San Diego for college in 2010. I have since graduated from San Francisco State University with a Bachelors Degree in Theater. I love performing and you can catch my shows around in the Bay Area. I began working at SVH as a receptionist but have since moved to the back and am ecstatic to be working as a vet assistant! In my spare time, I love petsitting and live with my feline fur baby, Callie.

Tabidoo, Clinic Cat  12/15/98 - 2/25/16

Tabidoo came to live at the hospital quite a few years ago. She used to sleep in her basket right next to the doctors while they wrote their records and kept the staff up to code at all times.  She was such a special kitty and stole the hearts of all us here.  She is missed very much but we know she is out there somewhere, sticking her tongue out and meowing for attention.  Rest in peace, Tabidoo.
